One lighthouse historian says there were as many as 247 lighthouses in Michigan, but now less than
100 are in good condition. A State of Michigan map listed 124 remaining lighthouses and some
books contain more or less. Some of these lights are no longer operational and some are only small
remnants of the ones that once illuminated the shore, but each has its own place in history.

Many of the existing lighthouses are second and third generations at or near their current locations.
The dates shown are the dates, I believe, the current lighthouse was erected or moved.

This tour started just north of the Indiana border at the St Joseph North Pier Lighthouse. The
photographic excursion took three and a half days to complete all the lighthouses on Lower
Michigan and the Upper Peninsula (UP). Due to time and rough water, none of the island
stations/lights and lighthouses were photographed.
